The Portuguese were enamored with the blue and white ceramic tiles known as azulejos (or azulejos) – a relic of the Arab-Muslims of southern Europe – after their king, Manuel I, visited the legendary Alhambra palace in southern Spain and fell in love with them. Enchanted and captivated by the beauty of his Spanish counterpart’s palace, Manuel I immediately ordered that the interior walls of his palace in Portugal be adorned with such tiles.
